In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
displays the ways people chose to marry in 19th century England. Through
the story of Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters and friends, Austen shows that
male gender and wealth led to greater social power, which led to expanded
options for marriage. In modern American society, there is still some truth to
the situation Austen showed, as many people still marry for money or status,
and men still dominate. Exploring the similarities and differences between
Elizabeth Bennet’s world and today’s society shows that while money and male
power still influence marriage, those factors are not as prevalent and new
factors such as fame can provide access up the social ladder and to greater
marriage choices.
