The family is so much nicer to the renters than to Gregor that it gives a huge contrast. The fact that they are renting out their rooms shows what bad shape they are in since Gregor is not providing for them. It's interesting that Gregor forgets to hide when he hears the music. The description of him is really gross and "his indifference to everything" shows his deterioration. IT seems like Gregor is experiencing a serious depression. He should see a bug therapist/bug whisperer.
