I thought it was weird that the novella opens up with him saying that he morphed into a bug but then goes on to talk about his job and his worries with it. I think if I was in this situation I would probably worry more about the morphing into a bug than my job. I also think that the morphing into a bug is a metaphor for him being stuck in a job.
