In class essay

Throughout metamorphosis Gregor's sister goes through a physical and emotional change. In the beginning she is completely supportive of Gregor and tries to help him with the transformation he has just endured by bringing him food and milk. Unfortunately over time she begins to forget about him and stops bringing him food and starts to see him as a nucence. This in itself is a metamorphosis from a naïve little girl to an adult in the mental aspec. In the final sentence of the novella Grete stretches her body and this is when her physical transformation into a young adult occurs. The mental and physical transformation of Gregor is very different. Gregor's body change happens instantly, "One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous vermin" (Kafka 5). While laying in bed Gregor doesn't worry about the transformation into a bug but worries more about being late to his job because he has to take care of his family. Throughout the novella Gregor loses his humanity and starts to change his tendencies into the ways of bugs. He loses his appetite for human food and starts to eat spoiled milk. This transformation is opposite of Grete's because while he is transforming back into his animal roots she is moving onward and turning into an adult. Gregor physical change in the end also differs from Grete because while he shrivels up and dies she is stretching and developing physically into a young woman.
